Some of you may be wondering if CBC will observe the ordinances during the COVID-19 lockdown. Even though some churches chose to do the Lord’s Supper virtually, our church will postpone both the Baptism and the Lord’s Supper for the time being. The reason behind our decision is both theological and practical. From a theological perspective, as Baptists, we believe that the Lord’s Supper is a memorial observance and not something we do to be saved or to maintain our salvation. We are saved by grace through faith. We are commanded to do the Lord’s Supper as often as we do it. That means there are no Scriptural directives that it must be done a certain number of times or on certain occasions or on certain dates. From a practical perspective, we don’t want to put people who may not have the means to obtain the proper elements in a difficult situation. We also don’t want to cause people to observe the Lord’s Supper in an unworthy manner. Because the Lord’s Supper is a sacred ordinance, we will not do it virtually at the moment. If the Stay at Home directive prolongs for many months, then we are open to do it virtually with much preparation to ensure that it will be done right. We will play it by ear for now and see what happens in the coming months. We can always adjust as needed.
